I’ve lived in Brentwood CA for many years now and have come to call this place home. I’ve sat in Sunset Park and watched many games, traveled the Round Valley Regional Preserve trails about a hundred times, and sat countless times in the Brownstone Gardens to enjoy the nice weather. Growing old in this city is easy because it has everything I need, however, my aging knees have become a large hindrance on my mobility. When I was 75 yr old manyoung I could run for miles and miles but now at the ripe age of eighty-two, I find it hard getting around the block to the market. Getting help from family is hard because my only son is an international business consultant who spends most of his time across seas. I would ask for some help from my friends but they are in the same position as I am or already passed away. It is becoming really troublesome for me to do the things I need to do to get by so I decided I needed to branch out and find some reliable non-medical senior care.

I put on some fresh clothes and hailed a cab down to the Brentwood Public Library so I could jump on one of their computers and search for some help. I had the librarian assist me with the computer a little bit because I never really use these things. She helped me find a few different senior care companies in Brentwood CA, but one that really caught my eye was Seniors Helping Seniors. I really liked the concept where they had someone with similar experiences as me to help out with my in-home senior care. I decided to call them up and I enrolled in their program. It was very easy to work with these folks and I was surprised in how quickly I could start receiving help. It was only a week after calling and I was already receiving assistance to my doctor’s appointments, rides to the store, and even help around the house with some of the heavier things. I have been using Seniors Helping Seniors for quite some time now and I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. If you or anyone else are stuck in the same dilemma I was then don’t hesitate to give these folks a call. They are really kind and who knows, you may make a new friend along the way.

daycareVolunteering has changed my life.  In the past I’ve always thought volunteering was for those looking to add something to their resume or those needing to do community service, so I’ve always been hesitant when others have asked me to volunteer with them.  But a few months ago, I had a friend approach me and ask if I’d like to volunteer with them at a children’s daycare.  Hesitantly, I accepted.  I couldn’t really think of an excuse not to.  Looking back, I’m so glad I went.  It was such a rewarding feeling working with all of those kids, many of whom didn’t have very good homes to go back to.

I liked it so much that I kept going back week after week.  Each time, I got to meet new people and make new friends.  I eventually began to realize that working with children was something I was very passionate about.  So I decided to look for a career in working with children.  I really liked volunteering at the daycare, so I decided to look for something similar.  Fortunately, I live just a few miles away from a local child care center, Creative World School – FishHawk, so I decided to apply.

I was so happy that they called me in for an interview.  I was able to explain to them how I found my passion of working with children and why I enjoyed it so much.  They were so impressed that they offered me a job on the spot!  I graciously accepted and have now been working there for three months now.  I get to work with children of all ages – from pre-K to school aged children.

My new job is all thanks to my friend who convinced me to go to a volunteering event.  I want to pay it forward and help some of my other friends find things they’re passionate about as well.  I’ve signed a few of us up to volunteer at a summer camp next month!  I think it will be beneficial for all of us to go and try something new.

If you’ve ever been hesitant about volunteering for an event, my advice to you is to just get out there and try it.  The most you have to lose is just a few hours of your time.  Who knows, you may just find something you love!

Non-medical senior care services offer many benefits to aging adults. Many older adults wish to stay in their own home as long as possible.  Many feel uncomfortable and even demoralized when discussing the topic of leaving their home to live in an assisted living facility.

Declining vision and increased mobility difficulties make moving to a new home difficult. While assisted-living facilities and nursing homes offer a great deal of help for infirm elderly. Those with declining vision have often had years to learn to navigate their homes and have adapted to their declining vision. Having to learn the layout of a new assisted living bedroom or a room in a nursing home can actually decrease the independence of the elderly adult.

SeniorsA great alternative to out of home care for those who are in fair health is non-medical senior care. In-home senior care providers, such as Seniors Helping Seniors of Southwest Florida, offer help with daily tasks such as laundry, washing the dishes, dusting, vacuuming, and many other tasks. Providers also help with personal tasks such as bathing which may be difficult for older adults. This type of care is probably not suited to older adults who require extensive help with medications or who need 24-hour supervision. For those adults, care in a facility may be the best option. However, for many, receiving care in their home keep them happy and independent for many years.

Many older adults have pets to which they are deeply attached. These dogs and cats and sometimes even rabbits provide companionship and motivation to get out of bed every day. Non-medical senior care to assist with tasks of daily living can allow older adults to keep pets that they may otherwise have to re-home. Visits from home care providers can also provide socialization opportunities outside of the immediate family. A middle-age son or daughter may not have the time to drive the elderly parent to bingo or book club meetings; however, care providers can often offer transportation assistance as well. This can be a great opportunity for older adults to keep their minds sharp.

Senior care services can be found all around the country.  If you think this type of service could be very beneficial for you or a loved one, take the time to do some research online to find the best service in your area.  Take the next step to providing your loved one with the care and attention they deserve.
